The History of Akame: The Origin of Iga Ninjas and the Legend of Akame

During the Warring States period, Iga ninjas would come to Akame 48 Waterfalls to hone their physical and metal fortitude with exercise and spiritual practice at the falls.
Legend has it that the giant salamanders inhabiting the area served as a reference for their diving technique.

About 1,300 years ago, the ascetic En no Gyoja went to the falls for training, and mounted on an ox appeared Fudo Myoo (Acala), said to have founded Enju-in Temple, located right behind the hotel. The ox had red eyes, hence the name for the area, Akame (“red eyes”).
